The Full History of RAM Trucks: From Dodge Roots to a Standalone Legend

Early Beginnings Under Dodge (1930s–1980s)

Ram trucks trace their lineage back to the early days of Dodge. Dodge had been building tough trucks for decades, even adorning some models with a ram’s-head hood ornament as far back as 1933. However, the “Ram” name officially debuted in October 1980 for the 1981 model year, when Dodge rebranded its D-Series pickups as Dodge Ram trucks. These early models came in 150 (half-ton), 250 (¾-ton), and 350 (one-ton) variants, and carried forward the rugged reputation Dodge was known for.

In 1989, Dodge dropped a bombshell into the truck world by introducing a 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel engine into its heavy-duty lineup. With a turbocharger and direct injection, it delivered the kind of low-end torque and reliability that diesel fans dreamed of. For the first time, Dodge had something truly unique—and the sales numbers responded. This move laid the groundwork for Ram to become a heavy-duty powerhouse.

The “Big Rig” Look That Turned Heads (1994–2001)

In 1994, Dodge completely redesigned the Ram—and people took notice. The new model featured bold, semi-truck-inspired styling with a raised hood and prominent grille. It was a radical departure from anything else on the road and earned Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year award. Sales nearly doubled overnight.

Powerful gas engines like the 8.0L V10 and the continued availability of the Cummins diesel gave customers serious options for towing and hauling. The Laramie SLT trim brought comfort to the mix, while new extended cab options improved interior space. This was the era that truly redefined what a full-size pickup could be.

Third Generation Brings Refinement and Strength (2002–2008)

In 2002, Dodge launched a more refined and capable Ram. The 5.7L HEMI V8 returned with a roar, offering 345 horsepower and improved efficiency. Heavy-duty models followed in 2003 with updated frames, suspension, and even bigger diesel options. The 6.7L Cummins replaced the 5.9L mid-decade, bringing more power and cleaner emissions.

New cab options like the Mega Cab and off-road models like the Power Wagon gave buyers even more ways to tailor their truck to their lifestyle. Dodge successfully blended hard work with daily comfort, attracting more customers who needed trucks for both work and family.

The Birth of the RAM Brand (2009–2018)

In 2009, Chrysler made a bold move: it split RAM trucks into their own brand. No longer "Dodge Ram," the trucks were simply called RAM—and the brand had one mission: build the best trucks in the world.

The 2009 RAM 1500 introduced innovations like a coil-spring rear suspension, offering a smoother ride than traditional leaf springs. RAM also rolled out the clever RamBox storage system built into the bed rails and improved interior materials across the lineup.

Heavy-duty models were upgraded with even more power. The 6.7L Cummins pushed torque past 800 lb-ft, and in 2014, RAM became the first in its class to offer rear coil springs in the 2500 series for better ride quality. Special trims like the Laramie Longhorn, Big Horn, and Tradesman gave customers more ways to customize their truck experience.

Fifth Generation & the Rise of the TRX (2019–Present)

RAM continued to innovate with the launch of the fifth-generation RAM 1500 in 2019. With a lighter frame, improved aerodynamics, and advanced technology—including a 12-inch touchscreen—the new RAM 1500 raised the bar. eTorque mild-hybrid systems improved fuel efficiency, while new luxury trims rivaled premium SUVs.

In the heavy-duty world, RAM was the first to hit 1,000 lb-ft of torque with the Cummins diesel in the RAM 3500. It was an industry-shaking milestone that cemented RAM’s dominance in towing and power.

And then came the TRX.

With a 702-hp supercharged 6.2L HEMI V8, the TRX became the most powerful production pickup in history. Designed to dominate off-road trails and desert dunes, the TRX is RAM’s ultimate expression of performance and capability.
